Entering Contests

When entering contests, ALWAYS read the fine print to find out what licensing is granted to the sponsor, their affiliates, etc of the contest. Does the artist retain all or any rights after submission? Just submitting to a contest, whether chosen or not could void an artist's rights, allowing the image to become the property of the sponsor or publisher. Also, some contest holders claim unrestricted rights to publish and sell the artist's work while paying no royalties. ALWAYS read the fine print! For more information on copyrights (click.)

SMPA Art of Photography Show 2008

I was ecstatic when my piece Blue Shawl was one of the 102 photographs chosen for the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts' (SMPA) Art of Photography Show 2008!
The very accomplished Carol McCusker, PhD and Curator of Photography at the SMPA judged each submission.
Steven Churchill, SMPA's Curator and the show's Producer was a fabulous host!  He set up a pre and post party for all of the artists and a tour of the SD Museum of Photographic Art,  SD Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art SD.

Winter in Truro

Yesterday was a bit chilly, 27 degrees.  This picture was taken by the bay at Corn Hill.  What looks like sea foam here is really snow left on the beach!  Maybe the water comes up and freezes.
True to New England weather, today is much warmer - 50 degrees F.  The rain and wind has washed away the snow.
This morning Alison, who has lived here with her family forever, took Lucy, the Standard Poodle, Iggy, Torrey and I for a brisk walk through the woods and onto this bluff overlooking the Atlantic.  Years ago, Alison was married here when the bluff stuck out 30 more feet than now.  She cleared the brush the week before her marriage for the guests as it's a bit of a hike to that spot.  Hurricane Bob hit the week before.

Canon and Ricoh go to Sun Valley, ID

I just returned from a fabulous ski trip to Sun Valley, ID.
The image (above) was a compilation of 3 bracketed shots (HDR & tone mapped) taken with my tripod-mounted Canon Rebel XTi.
The second and third images were taken with my Ricoh GX100.  I used the digital zoom feature for the third.  It isn't as sharp as I would hope but it's still a quality image.
I continue to be impressed with the result of my Ricoh.

Ricoh Caplio GX100 - A Compact Camera from Heaven!

I finally purchased a Ricoh GX100 compact camera, first seen in clutches of a fantastic photographer, teacher, and humorist Dan Burkholder at my Maine Media Workshop.

I've owned and loved a series of Canon Power Shot Digital Elphs, the most recent SD600.  The quality of this Elph seemed less than the others.  I also own the Canon Digit Rebel XT that I'll be upgrading to a EOS 40D if I don't go back to my film cameras (I miss the extra crispness of film images but love the convenience of digital).

For samples of images I took with this Ricoh and more information, go to my .mac site.

Popflash.com is having a great New Year's special on this camera which includes the case, extra battery, viewfinder and free shipping.
